1984: Summary

1984: Summary

This is also a society who’s leaders are self serving and don’t set their objectives for the typical good by which all of the society will benefit. The celebration doesn’t require to justify its self-centered ways because it holds all of the power.

The symbol of the celebration was Huge Brother. The idealism of blind commitment was embodied in this sign. It was the centre of control. The Party has actually set its agenda of totally controlling each and every single human mind by narrowing down the intricacy of human thought. They will attempt achieve this through the removal of speech to a type where people can no onger believe for themselves. These future people would not have the ability to commit any criminal activities against the Celebration. There is no possible way these human beings would even think “criminal” ideas to start with given that they had no knowledge of any criminal activity from personal experience or history.

The main character of this book is Winston Smith. Although he is portrayed as a criminal, I believe that he is a victim of a system that is criminal. All through this book Winston’s convictions lead us to think that he is ethical and the Party is unjustified but it is left as much as the readers discretion to decide hether he is the criminal or just a victim of a totalitarian society. The first circumstances of Winstons “criminal” nature was when he bought an illegal journal, quill and bottle of ink to record his ideas. Although he had actually so called “criminal” ideas before, the journal seemed to highlight the more bold ideas in him regarding how to secure free from the Party’s reign. This all indirectly caused his meeting with a woman called Julia who shared his sensations and was either extremely brave or really silly since she was more open then he about her feelings. I think that these and the other actions following his preliminary criminal” offence are warranted and that Winston Smith is not a “criminal”.

My first set of examples regarding the flaws in the Party federal government are how they pitted family members versus each other, and how the real nature of the household was destroyed because of this. The managing objectives of the Party were shown in how children were used to spy on their moms and dads. The toys offered to the kids such as ear horns were utilized to listen in on the discussions of their parents. Through groups and activities that were supplied, the kids were really taught how to spy and were offered reason for this act. They were given the title of “Kid Hero” when they denounced their moms and dads and reported them to the idea police. The children felt it was perfectly appropriate to inform on their moms and dads to the authorities despite the fact that it indicated punishment for their mothers and daddies. When Winston was in prison he fulfilled a coworker named Mr.

Parsons who’s kid turned him in for saying” down with big brother” in his sleep. Couples were also impacted. They would report their spouses or children if they said anything inappropriate, did anything improper, displayed a facial tick or any other abnormalities. The Celebration removed the standard pleasures of their individuals, as another approach of control. One example of this is how the food was intentionally extremely bland and unsavory. There is an account in the book where Winston remains in a public cafeteria and longingly remembers a much better time and how food was enjoyable then. Another example od pleasure deprivation is how they brought sex to a level where the general public was repulsed by the idea by means of the anti-sex league.

The general public continued having sex as it was the will of the Party that individuals must reproduce. The deterioration of sex also kept the married and unmarried alike brimming with energy for hate week, war marches and other fascist public activities which the people needed to participate in. A particular example of the destruction of sex in Winston’s life was the account he made in his journal of his partner’s attitude towards sex and how she winced at his touch. She called sex “our responsibility to the Party” or “making a baby”. Since of his partner, he became as repulsed at the concept of sex with her as she was with him. Winston recalls becoming physically ill at the reference of it.Winston wasn’t pleased with the tatus quo concerning sex.

It ultimately resulted in their divorce. It is necessary to discuss that there were 2 classes of individuals, Celebration people and Proles. What guidelines apply to the Party citizens did not always apply to the lower class Proles. They government did not appreciate the Proles who were trivial to them. Although Proles were enabled to consume any alcohol and gamble, this was not acceptable for Party people. This was part of the denial of satisfaction. In order for the people to believe the Celebration’s perversions of the fact, the Party needed to make their fiction truth.

The Celebration butchered individuals, burned books, shredded and altered documents in order to manage details. Winston Smith’s task was to alter old federal government documents, birth certificates and lots of other things. Winston was a willing part of this deceptiveness until his realization that what he was doing was immoral. His troubling conscience drove him to record his sensations in his prohibited journal as part of his individual rebellion. The supreme deception that the Party committed on individuals was the war the Party staged versus it’s own citizens using a created villain named Goldstein. It’s intriguing that this Jewish name was provided to a villain in this unique written in 1947 by a Party imitated Hitler’s fascist Germany ). To keep it’s economy going Oceania needed to remain in a continuous state of war thus the Celebration’s development of Goldstein.

This character relayed “criminal” thoughts for 2 minutes each day and infuriated the citizens to the point that they gladly went to war. The Partys objective was attained. This calculated deception cause senseless suffering and death of many Party people and Proles. At the end of this unique the reader is left with the decision of where the criminal offense ies. This choice is subjective. Democracy is a model of government which I have selected to compare. It is the same style of government which both the author and myself have actually experienced and it is the one which serves its individuals the most effectively.

If you believe in social order at any cost as do fascists, then you will have to believe Winston Smith is a criminal. If one takes a more gentle approach, you will have to look at the numbers of people that were harmed or killed by this “Party Government’s” actions. Human beings are a social animal and they need interaction and contact with other umans to thrive. The unmanageable need to belong to a group in some cases drives people to compromise themselves. A common example of this is a teens option of music, clothes etc to come from the group. A more extreme example are religious cult members such as David Koresh’s Branch Dividians who even willingly excepted the order to kill themselves. People become going to accept the unacceptable till there conscience will no longer allow it.

This is what took place to Winston Smith. He was an item of his mankind and it must not be a crime to be a human.
