A Good Man Is Hard to Find: Irony

“An Excellent Man is Difficult to Discover” In the short story, “A Great Guy is Hard to Discover” there is paradox all through the pages. It shows how you ought to follow your gut instinct when you think you should not go someplace, when you understand something bad is going to occur. In the story it also discusses how the granny wore her nice clothes in case of a mishap, she wished to look like a woman in case anything bad was to take place.

The granny was continuously talking about the excellent in individuals, however was she a good female?

The first bit of paradox the story throws at the reader is on the first page when the grandma is talking about how she doesn’t wish to go to Florida since that’s where the Misfit is headed. As the grandmother is trying to get her child Bailey to listen as she states, “The Misfit is aloose from the Federal Pen and headed toward Florida and you check out here what it says he did to these individuals. Simply you read it. I wouldn’t take my kids in any direction with a criminal like that aloose in it. I couldn’t response to my conscience if I did” (O’Connor 281).

Now I don’t think that the paradoxical twist is that the misfit was headed to Florida just like the family, I think that the twist is that the Misfit so happen be on the exact same dirt roadway that the grandma asked her boy Bailey to refuse in the future in the story. The grandma wanted to deny this dirt roadway in Georgia due to the fact that she kept in mind an old plantation house she had gone to when she was more youthful. After declining the road she then remembered that this was not the road at all, the old plantation home she had actually kept in mind was in Tennessee, not Georgia.

The second major ironic twist that stood apart to me was how the grandmother wore excellent clothing to go on a trip, “In case of an accident, anybody seeing her dead on the highway would understand simultaneously she was a girl” (O’Connor 282). The grandma wore a navy gown with a straw hat that had white violets on it. Certainly the grandma was dressed like a woman, however did she act on it at all times? I think she did just that, I think she imitated a girl but was not truly one. Grandmothers cat caused Bailey to have a mishap. … as the grandma hopped out of the cars and truck, her hat still pinned to her head but the damaged front brim standing up at a jaunty angle and the violet spray hanging off the side” (O’Connor 287). At this moment is when I think that the grandmother acts as if she is a girl. If she was a real woman then maybe her clothes would not have actually been screwed up, or there would not have actually been an accident at all. However there is still that piece of thought about how the grandma understood to dress in case of a mishap.

The last little paradox is how the granny kept discussing excellent men, and how they are tough to find. When the family stops at the diner to consume she talks with Red Sammy and his wife about how difficult great guys are tough to find, however then she also tells Red Sammy that he is a great guy because he let a number of males charge gas. Red Sammy’s better half states there isn’t no one that she can rely on, “‘And I don’t count nobody out of that, not no one,’ she repeated, looking at Red Sammy” (O’Connor 285).

After they damage an automobile appears with The Misfit and his two side begins it, who end up not to be excellent men. The granny understands real quickly that the man is The Misfit, she acknowledged him from the image in the newspaper. Right after arriving Bobby Lee takes Bailey and his boy John Wesley into the woods to kill them. The granny went on about how the Misfit could be a good guy, and how he must hope. The Misfit informed her that his household was great people, he just wasn’t.

Quickly Bobby Lee and Hiram took the childrens mother, June Star, and the child to the woods to meet the young boys. The granny then recognized that she needs to consider something quickly, since she would be next. They began talking about Jesus and how he did or didn’t raise the dead. The Misfit stated that if he didn’t understand but if he would have existed he would have known much better and would not be the way he is now. “Why you are among my own children. You are among my own children!” (O’Connor 293).

After the grandma said that she touched him on the shoulder and the Misfit turned around and shot her 3 times in the chest. This was a great narrative for paradox, because the grandmother was correct about many things. The granny understood not to go towards Florida due to the fact that The Misfit was headed that method after escaping from the pen. She was right about dressing like a girl in case of an accident, because certainly there was an accident, however she triggered the mishap by bringing her cat along without anybody understanding.

Then there is mention a great male, is there any such thing? Red Sammy’s other half wouldn’t even think about him as a great guy, if your other half does not think you are nobody really can. The Misfit comes along and speaks with the grandma for a while about great people, while doing so shoots her family then her dead. ‘”She would have been a good lady,” The Misfit said, “if it had actually been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life”‘ (O’Connor 293). This opts for my assumption that the grandma was just acting like a girl, and The Misfit even translucented her lies.
