Week 4 Discussion 2 Main Post Life is laden with numerous mysterious aspects, most of which, we can barely comprehend. These are the issues that bring out more questions than answers and constantly fuel debate. In the week’s select readings, these issues include the query of time travel, potential impact of rapidly growing technology on the future, and the question of whether there can be a perfect world, devoid of the chaos that characterize our society. Spearheading the time travel debate, Carl Sagan indicates that there is a possibility that people can travel through time, but only if relevant technology is invented.

One of the principal concerns brought about by this issue is: if time travel is possible, would people be able to change past events and alter the current state of affairs. In Bill Joy’s and Alvin Toffler’s articles, the primary concern is whether rapid and unregulated technology advancement would have a negative impact on future generations. According to Bill Joy, swift development of genetic engineering, robotics and nanotechnology, enables humans to create things capable of self-replication thus laying the foundation for impending doom.

Toffler’s presents a closely related argument, suggesting that revolution of society toward super-industrialization may overwhelm people in the future, causing human disconnection and stress. The final reading on Thomas More’s utopia, describes a perfect fictional world free of all negativities. These writers perceive the human brain as being limitless and capable of many discoveries. However, they all seem to support the commonsense, which requires individuals to acknowledge the nature of life’s order and the need to live in a manner that respects it.

Diane Ackerman in her book Alchemy of the Mind explores not only the scientific elements of the brain, but also its social and psychological links to mind development. While the other writers primarily focus on the scientific reasoning of the human brain, Ackerman interlinks the scientific aspects with emotive, social, mechanics of language and other elements. Therefore, Diane Ackerman provides the most comprehensive and effective outlook on human reasoning and better platform for understanding life’s cryptic issues.

Peer ResponseTravis is right to assert that issues of morality and philosophy usually present complex questions. This is because virtually everyone has their view on what constitutes moral principles. For instance, in the persistent right to life debate, many argue that abortion is wrong, while others present an equally convincing argument that it is justifiable. The same complexity applies to philosophy, since the discipline attempts to provide understanding of life’s numerous questions. Travis goes on to smoothly link this observation to that made by Ackerman, that the brain is equally complex and conscious of itself.

This assertion clearly brings about more questions just like Travis clearly illustrates. He successfully shows the practicality of Ackerman’s statement that humans are inquisitive in nature and will always attempt to answer all questions regardless of how difficult they may be. Travis also correctly indicates that Ackerman has in depth knowledge about the scientific aspects of the brain, as well as, its artistic elements as shown by her extensive descriptive vocabulary and poetic analysis. While Travis’ analysis is accurate and he effectively shows that Ackerman’s argument is outstanding, there is no basis with which to compare it.

This is because he does not provide examples from the week’s readings, as advised. ReferenceKrasny, M., & Sokolik, M. (2009). Sound Ideas. New York, NY: McGraw-Hill Humanities.
