Other (s) Book Review Preliminary Sheet In the book “Desiring Canada” Patricia Cormack and James Cosgrave attempts to explore the intricate connections between the popular culture, sports, media and the Canadian state. Taking as their examples the NHL hockey violence, popular CBC contests, Television comedy, Tim Hortons advertising campaigns and business gambling, the two authors have comprehensively examined the potential correlation between the contemporary popular expressions of national identity and the appeal of the interests of the Canadian state in the media or the pleasures of citizens (Cormack and Cosgrave 7).

One of the issues that I may pursue in my discussion is how the media and the popular culture including sport and other stately pleasures have been used to construct the Canadian identity in order to develop a better understanding of the meaning of being a Canadian. In addition, I will also dry to look into what the popular symbols of Canadian identity have in common. In this regard, each of the five chapters will serve as a case study in itself. Finally, another possible area of focus in the book will be to discuss the different ways through which the State mixes into the everyday lives of the citizens.

According to Patricia Cormack and Cosgrave, the absence of Tim Horton’s coffee from daily routines might make individuals not only unusual- but a popular brand in the country and also an overwhelmingly susceptible. Don Cherry’s muscular patriotism appears not to abide by CBC’s restlessness attempts to reduce all cultures to a list or a contest. Works CitedCormack, Patricia and Cosgrave, James F.
