The thesis statement is that “Offices should be set free to allow socialization and interaction among employees as a way of promoting communication. Gladwell further believes that the sole purpose of offices was overrated or was either not true. He gives an example on how innovations can be achieved through casual interaction with outsiders instead of employees within an organization (Gladwell 1-2). The perception of an office is that ideas are born out of it yet the offices do very little to promote that.

Gladwell further brings in Allen’s study that showed how difficult it is for employees to communicate among themselves especially regarding the development of the company. He feels that colleagues may not feel comfortable asking or enquiring about something. It therefore makes it easier for people to seek advice from outside rather than from within. Gladwell believes that an office should have casual talks just as it happens in the suburbs as people are likely to exchange ideas. Gladwell asserts that offices should not have barriers in their designs and that employees should always behave as if they are in public place.

He insists of concentrating on the constituent of an office rather than the design. He talks of Stephenson who is a consultant at Netform and is capable of identifying the right people to be moved in various offices (Gladwell 4-5). Offices designers tend to focuses on how to trigger employees’ behaviors and enable people socialize. Gladwell’s conclusion indicates that even though employees realize the need to socialize, this is rarely taken into consideration. In most cases, Gladwell shows that people are what they are made.

Individuals are shaped by society and their background and therefore, it is very difficult to predict their behavior. Works CitedGladwell, Malcolm. “why your bosses want to turn your new office into Greenwich village.” New Yorker, 11 Dec. 2000. Print.
