Nigerian Manifest Destiny in Things Fall Apart

Chinua Achebe’s novel, “Things Break Down,” composed in 1958, focuses on the manifest destiny in Nigeria. Colonialism is the social, political, economic, and cultural practices which develop in response and resistance to colonialism. This unique follows the Igbo people as it was colonized in Africa. A man named Okonkwo was the leader of this town and wished to be well known in all the villages because he was little. He wanted this because his father was a failure in his eyes which was not acceptable for him. This male worked very hard to make his goal come true. However, he was so wrapped up in making this goal become a reality that his life started to fall apart. Okonkwo did not want to look weak in anyone’s eyes and this flaw made him act in manner ins which he made fast choices. These choices made trouble and sadness come to both he and his family.
“The white man is very clear. He came silently and peaceably with his religious beliefs. We were amused at his foolishness and permitted him to stay. Now he has actually won our bros. And our clan no longer imitate one. He put a knife on the important things that held us together and we have actually broken down.” Okonkwo’s society breaks down and he loses things he loves to him such as his customs and language. He does not was the change that he feels is being required on him and he tries hard to keep the values and practices that were a custom in his society all his life. He is trying to do this at the time that there is an intrusion of Europeans who completely destroy this conventional African society. “Things Break Down” is written in 2 parts. The part goes day by day in the lives of the Ibo individuals and the second part discusses the European missionaries coming in and doing their thing to make changes. Moving from living in the day to day clan of the Ibo to having to make harsh modifications to your life and quit traditions and worths you hold dear becomes really hard. The missionaries that can be found in have a big effect on the Ibo people. They are able to take control of and alter the tribe into Christian individuals. Okonkwo was mad when his oldest boy, Nwoye, converted to Christianity. Okonkwo had big prepare for his earliest kid and now his child selected the white male’s faith. Okonkwo hangs himself because he might decline all of the changes in his life.
When the language switched from native tongue to English with the coming of the white guy, this is an example of the correlation in between morality and literacy. Another example of post-colonialism is how the novel ends. The last paragraph of the novel goes over how the District Commissioner plans to write a book on his experiences and not with how people that the reader had actually pertained to identify with ended up. The novel, Things Break down, is a great example of what Nigeria once was and discusses how it has actually changed. It shows how this group of people discovered to handle change, how change can and does impact each private person in a various method, and how modifications can slip up on people and come gradually that these modifications occur and individuals are surprised that they have actually already taken place. True post-colonialism deals with a cultural identity in colonized societies and the methods which societies deal with these modifications. This unique represents post-colonialism in a huge way.
