Summary of An Excellent Guy is Difficult to Discover

The story, “An Excellent Male Is Difficult To Discover,” shows genuine belief of religious beliefs and pretentious belief of religion. Individuals, who think religion genuinely, are genuine to their life and act with correct hierarchy of values. Nevertheless, people, who has pretentious beliefs, behave how they think it is right. But this habits can bring bad consequences because their beliefs of religious beliefs is normally incorrect realistically and ethically. Moreover, pretentious beliefs of faith even reject their own belief.

In this narrative, through the main characters, Misfit and grandma, it shows the process and effect for pompous belief of religious beliefs to reach the genuine belief. Grandma thinks that she can influence The Misfit by informing him her belief and turns conversation to religious beliefs. Flannery O’Connor described, “The grandmother noticed how thin his shoulder blades were simply behind his hat because she was standing up looking down on him. “Do you every pray?” she asked” (8 ). She keeps asking him to hope, but it didn’t inspire him at all. Nevertheless, paradoxically, they discover enlightenment through violence in the future.

Understanding themselves and their surrounding, and awareness of spiritual reality accompany a huge effect. The effect is strong enough that ruins the pompous beliefs, so enlightenment would be violent that can result in death. Both characters have actually faced with more shock when they experienced a crucial moment due to their pompous faith, and the consequences are death and murder. Grandmother pretends she is really spiritual. Granny pretends she is really religious. Due to bias and conceit, she didn’t even attempt to look The Misfit deeply and just thinks that The Misfit is uncivilized and insincere.

At the end of the story, granny is threatened and falls under confusion. However, as she sees that The Misfit is regretting himself, her mind cleared. The author writes,” She saw the guy’s face twisted near her own as if he were going to sob and she murmured, “Why you are among my children. You are among my own kids!” She connected and touched him on the shoulder” (10 ). It shows that she wanted to safeguard The Misfit once she saw his weakness. Although she looked at other people with loaded with prejudice, an abrupt hazard of life stirred her and she was able to see other’s true inner side.

The effect of realization was death. She got killed when she realized The Misfit’s real inner side and attempted to reach him. But she might die with guilty of a smile considering that the truth and realization pleased her. The Misfit is likewise considered as a person with pretentious belief of faith given that he acts with his own reasoning, but his logic isn’t accepted by others and brings bad outcome. At the end of the story, The Misfit felt ashamed as granny attempted to reach his inner side, and finally he shot her. It seemed like he was embarrassed due to the fact that there was nobody attempted to reach his inner side.

In the story, The Misfit says, “Nome,” he said. “It wasn’t no error. They had the documents on me” (9 ). Individuals, who put him in jail, didn’t see the truth but evaluated him by documents. Ultimately, he thinks that the papers are the fact and he believes that he dedicated a sin. In deep inside of him, he understood he is innocent, so based upon his anger, he built his own false belief. However, as someone recognized his fact, he might seemed like his pretentious beliefs collapsing. Once he killed the granny, he realized his covert inside pressed away due to other people’s judgment. However, the effect of realization was murder.

This time, he actually commits a criminal activity. Dividing excellent and bad is vague and subjective, but each characters has the obvious characteristics that can not be concluded as excellent individuals. Bailey, son of the granny, looks like he does not truly care of his mom, being mean to her. It is not even clear that why he wants to go to Florida for a vaction. The author composes, “She asked Bailey if he want to dance but he just glared at her. He didn’t have a naturally warm disposition like she did and journeys made him nervous” (3 ). Two children, John Wesley and June Star, represents individual who are immature and rude.

In the story, O’Connor described, “But no one’s eliminated,” June Star said with dissatisfaction as the grandmother limped out of the automobile” (6 ). Like this, the characters do not looks like excellent people. In addition, the shocking ending– a household massacre– makes the story more impractical. Nevertheless, there is a string of hope that there are still great individuals given that Red Sammy understands and interacts with grandmother. There is a quote stating, “A great male is hard to discover,” Red Sammy stated. “Everything is getting awful. I keep in mind the day you might go off and leave your screen door unlatched. Not no more” (4 ).
