Reflections on The Story of an Hour

For my reading reflection paper, I chose to read The Story of an Hour by Kate Chapin (1894 ). I was amazed by both the author and the story she informed. Chapin put this story together in a way that made it feel extremely realistic. This narrative has lots of symbols and imagery throughout that make the story come alive for to the readers. Chapin utilizes signs and signs to foreshadow occasions that will happen in the future in her stories. She will also foreshadow the future of the characters to peak your interest.

Within The Story of an Hour, you are familiar with Louise, a homemaker in the 1900s with a recognized heart issue. So, terrific care was taken when her sister informed her of her partner Bentleys death. After Mrs. Mallard had heard the news, she had a very psychological response to the news of her other half’s tragic death. She was struck with grief at the idea of her husband’s passing. Although, it was not long till the sorrow passed as her mind questioned how life would be alone and free to live for herself. She then was conquered with her ideas of new found freedom following the news of her other halves death.

The pleasure she had was brief lived, she knew she would grieve once again when she saw his dead body lying peacefully. Ultimately, she opened her bedroom door for her sister that had been knocking and asking her to come out. They started to decrease the stairs and at that time there was the noise of somebody putting the keys in the door. As they were decreasing the stairs, the door opens to reveal Bentley there alive, he had not made it to him work environment after all. When Mrs. Mallard saw him, she was shocked after the past hour of her emotions going up and down then she unexpectedly passes away of heart disease.

There are a number of times in this narrative I found myself surprised by Louise and her actions. The very first time she surprised me was when she revealed a lot joy after hearing of her hubbies death. As stated in The Story of an Hour, She said it over and over under her breath complimentary, free, complimentary (Clugston, 2014 2. 2)! She celebrated silently to herself. I did not expect this due to the fact that she was so upset not long previously. Again, I was likewise amazed at the end of the story when Mrs. Mallard suddenly dies.

Even with her known heart issues, I was still surprised that her death was so unexpected, and after that story was over. It was told that Mrs. Mallard had died of heart disease. The author Kate Chopin does an outstanding task keeping your interest with the use of numerous images and signs throughout the short story. Some examples of signs in the writing are Louises heart difficulties, the window, a door, Mrs. Mallard, and the patches of blue sky. Likewise, nature is utilized as a symbol of the terrific burst of emotions. Like, spring signifies the new life.

Louise’s heart problems were considered to be a sign for the absence of love she had in her life as the window is a sign for a couple things. First, it represents the flexibility she felt when she got the news of her hubby dying. Equally, it was also a sign for whatever Louise desired but didn’t have in her life, such as, freedom. Mrs. Mallard herself represents an example of the women in her time period, due to the fact that lots of were dissatisfied with the marriage limitations back then. Furthermore, springtime is a sign of brand-new exciting life that Mrs.

Mallard thought awaited her while she looked out the window, and also spots of blue sky that signify beginning of brand-new life. In truth, an excellent example of imagery and metaphor is expressed throughout the story is the use of storm. As mentioned in The story of an hour When the storm of sorrow had actually spent itself she disappeared to her room alone (Clugston, 2014, 3). Storm of grief being the metaphor to reveal the grief she felt. Strong imagery that assists you feel the tone of the story is used to shed light to the power of the stories passions. I might feel and see what Mrs.

Mallards was wanting and longing for at that time. After all, that is what develops making use of outstanding imagery in the story. The placement of other literary gadgets, as in similes, help the reader truly value the story and feel the tone as they read. Although, The Story of an Hour is a short story, it tells a big story. You get a feeling of how it was to be married in those times. Also, Louise went from an extremely high emotional state to a very low emotion all in the period of one hour. Yes, everything in this story happened in only an hour.
