Soma in Brave New World

Essay In the best society, male does not require to turn to drugs to keep society in balance. But in Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, society is based upon keeping everyone happy, and if for some reason somebody ends up being unhappy then there is always soma, the “perfect” drug. The whole society is based upon conditioned reactions and predestination, where the person does what is anticipated and does it well. The soma helps to keep the society moving, always working to keep production moving, just like Ford’s assembly line.

Huxley’s soma represents a halt in development, a dead stop for mankind; an era where all the authentic joy and marvel and malice and envy of life are all suppressed by chemicals as artificial as the feelings they produce. Soma is the ultimate injustice: the oppression of the human
