Tessie’s Revenge in The Lottery, a Short Story by Shirley Jackson

The crowd of villagers tossed the stones at Tessie with all their may. “NO! Stop it! Please!” Tessie shouted with tears in her eyes. “What’s taking place?” Little Davy asked Mr. Hutchinson. With tears dropping his face, Mr.Hutchinson stated “Oh, it’s nothing you have to worry about. Just guarantee me until this is over.” Expense Jr and Nancy started tossing the stones ever so softly because they could not have focused knowing what is occurring to their mother.

“Come on! Toss them more difficult!” Old Male Warner shouted above the crowd. “No wonder the other towns quit the lottery game,” Nancy stated as she covered her face, not letting anybody see the tears in her eyes. Costs Jr and Nancy turned away from the crowd, not being able to take a look at the scary crowd. “Why didn’t anybody stop this? They all know it’s incorrect, however they still choose to kill an innocent person each and every single year!” Expense Hutchinson screamed at the crowd, but nobody paid any attention, as they were all too busy throwing stones. Soon enough, the abuse was over. It appeared like hours and hours to the Hutchinsons. They could not bear looking at the remains of Tessie Hutchinson.

They collected around Tessie, inspecting if she was still alive, which is very uncommon in many cases the years prior to. “She’s gone” Expense Hutchinson whispered. He carried Tessie in his arms towards the cemetery. It was a really far stroll across the town, but it deserved it, in honor of Tessie. The kids saw how their very own dad, Expense Hutchinson began to bury their mother. Bill dug and dug with all his might, tears blurring his vision, but he kept going as quickly as he could. As soon as Expense finished, he and the kids started walking back towards their home.

On the other hand, a couple of minutes after Costs and the kids went home, Tessie’s hand struck out of the dirt. Old Male Warner, he was strolling by, saw Tessie’s hand and ran as fast as he could, although it wasn’t that quickly due to his aging. He pulled her out of the dirt, as she gasped for air. He took her back to his house to clean herself up. They started walking, Old Male Warner covered Tessie’s arm around his shoulder and supported her while they were walking. “I thought you were dead. What occurred? Why were you buried?” He asked her. Recoiling after each step, she handled to say,” I do not remember. I lost consciousness throughout the routine.”

Old Male Warner felt guilty after throwing stones at her, so he attempted his absolute best to get everything she needed, but she will always remember what he did or forgive him. At Old Guy Warner’s house, she took a bath while Old Man Warner began to establish dinner. When Tessie was done, she snuck out of the bathroom as quiet as a mouse. She went into the kitchen area and got a knife. She then approached behind Old Guy Warner and got her vengeance. She left a letter on his body and ran towards the forest and was never ever seen once again.
