How Things Broke Down In the unique Things Break down, Chinua Achebe depicts a character, Okonkwo, as a strong and admired leader. Life is terrific in Umoufia, Nigeria. Until Okonkwo gets banished from his village for 7 years. Throughout that time the European missionaries came and developed a church in the Evil forest of Umoufia. This made Okonkwo distressed to come back to his village and restore the Ibo culture however, it was more of a challenge than he thought.

Throughout the unique Okonkwo is a fantastic leader however, he, himself, is challenged by the cultural accident because before the missionaries came in he is the “leading dog” of the Ibo people, he is respected and feared and “he had actually won popularity as the best wrestler in the nine towns. “(Achebe, 8). However now that the Western people are in-charge, “They had actually developed a court where the District Commissioner judged cases in ignorance” (Achebe, 174).

Okonkwo has lost all that since the Western individuals take away the fighting video games the Ibo individuals had. Many people do not except change and in this novel, Chinua Achebe reveals Okonkwo as an ideal example of that. Okonkwo does numerous things to reveal his disapproval of the Western individuals taking over his house place; such as, burning down the church and eliminating the messenger.

Okonkwo attempts to explain to his people that “He has actually put a knife on the things that held us together and we have broken down” (Achebe, 176). This metaphor is utilized to demonstrate how the life of Umoufia has changed exceptionally and to show how simple it was for the strings to be cut and retied however the Westerners. Okonkwo demands adhering to the Ibo lifestyle however a man can only be pushed up until now prior to he reaches his breaking point. Achebe shows Okonkwo’s breaking point when his individuals do not to support him after he eliminates the messenger in rage. He thought that ending his life would be easier than enduring this outrageous cultural dispute any longer. In Things Fall Apart, things do just that. Chinua Achebe depicts Okonkwo as a very appreciated and famous leader. When there is a cultural accident with some Western people, his identity is lost since of the respect that is lost from his people.

By this time “The Africa of the empires is dying … And Europe too where we are signed up with by the marine” (Senghor, 182). He then manages this crash with violence and when he has had all he can take, he commits suicide.
