Ladies and The Story of an Hour

“A woman’s location is in the house”. These words undeniably categorized the function of the 19th century American female. Unlike American women these days, 19th century females were seen as mere accessories to guys and there was really little space for freedom of speech, expression, or independence for females. Kate Chopin was a woman of the 1800’s who was extremely influential to lady of her time and beyond. Although, her work did not become popular until the 1900’s. Kate was known for writing very controversial works that were taboo in her time.

But with time Kate’s stories kick started the women’s motion. Motherhood was viewed in the 1890s, as one of the most important contributions ladies could make to her family and to the world. Guy were considered as the money makers and women as the homemakers. For the most part you never really saw a female in a correct labor force in the late 1800s. If a female ever had a genuine task it was an extremely womanly job such as a seamstress, never a task like a doctor or press reporter; those jobs were just for males.

The wives never made their own loan and were provided a sort of allowance by their spouses, who controlled all of the money since they were the ones working. The jobs of women in their houses were normal chores depending if you were wed to a rich man. If you were more on the greater class of society you may have a servant who tends to the cleaning a maintenance of the house, while you look after the kids. If you were a lower class household, the other half would do the cleaning and cooking on top of taking care of the kids.

Some ladies welcomed this and accepted it while others resented this lifestyle and seemed like they were being kept back. With the absence of understanding from males some ladies chose they had sufficient and were prepared to take their lives into their own hands. They just wished to live independantly and really live, such as in “The Story of an Hour.” After Mrs. Mallard received the news that her partner had died in a tragic railway accident she was upset and after that her feelings altered,” she saw beyond that bitter minute a long procession of years to come that would belong to her definitely.

And she opened and spread her arms out to them in welcome. There would be no one to live for her throughout those coming years; she would live for herself” (Chopin) She was over-whelmed with the thought of liberty and the life she would live and invited life. Her sensations quickly changed when her hubby walks through the door and was so devastated she died of a heart attack. Not only were the females of the 1800s not able to work they were restricted from many other things. Women were not allowed to vote, sign agreements, own property, and even acquire a genuine education.

Women started acknowledging this discrimination early on, and authors like Kate Chopin stimulated the fire below the females of America and right after the fight for the rights of women started. Trying to gain the right to vote was the start of the women’s movement in the 1900s. Women are just as much human as men, however weren’t being dealt with as such. Ladies were tired of being disregarded and were done being silenced and were all set to take make their voices heard. “She wept at the same time, with sudden, wild desertion” (Chopin). In Chopin’s short story” Story of an Hour” Mrs.

Mallard’s very first reaction to the news of her hubbies death was desertion. This reveals a lot about the lives of ladies of that time. Females in the 1800s were completely depending on their husbands to live. Given that ladies were unable to support themselves, they had to rely on discovering a hubby who can look after them. Mrs. Mallard didn’t understand what was going to take place to her understand that her other half was gone. Not only was a woman unable to get a real self sustaining job, it was a significant taboo to be a single female in the 1800s, and they would be avoided for it.

If you were a man in the 1800s your life was a lot easier than that of a woman’s. Lots of things worked against women, such as the reality ladies are physically weaker than guys. This is most likely among the leading reasons for why women lost the battle for dominance when human beings came to be. Resulting in a male controlled society. Before there was enough research study to understand too much about the anatomy of people and how the brain worked, women were thought to be intellectually inferior to males.

Although, till this day men are normally stronger than ladies physically, it has actually been scientifically proven that gender does not play a huge role in the intellectual ability of ones brain. Leading people to think that all ladies benefit is producing babies. Females have actually come a long way since the 1800s. Females can vote, run for workplace, own residential or commercial property, get an education, and even remain single for the rest of their lives if thats what the want. Women are now complimentary to be their own individual. Although, there will always be a fight for equality however daily progress is being made to ensure ladies are being given the same chances as males.
